Technology has influenced beauty standards in many ways from photo editing apps like Facetune to Instagram filters. Yuho Kamo is a Japanese hair artist based in London who uses CGI technology to complete his creations. But rather than alter someone’s appearance to bring them one step closer to the ‘ideal’ look, his work celebrates ‘bad taste.’ Blown out of proportion and alien-like, the looks he creates stand in rebellion against the tyranny of what’s considered beautiful or classic at a given moment. Instead, his punk-inspired futuristic oeuvre inspires us to seek freedom of expression when it comes to the way we look. Recently, he released his digital work in physical form as a zine titled JUSTFORFUN. Beautifully bizarre and unapologetically expressive, his work transcends beauty into the realm of digital art.
페이스튠을 비롯한 보정 앱부터 인스타그램 필터까지. 기술의 발달이 아름다움의 기준에 큰 영향을 미치고 있는 지금. 런던을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 일본 출신 헤어 아티스트 가모 유호(Yuho Kamo)는 CGI 기술을 이용해 작품의 완성도를 높인다. 그러나 모델의 얼굴을 이상적인 미에 가까운 모습으로 보정하는 것이 아닌 ‘나쁜 취향’을 추구한다. 외계인 같은 과도한 비율의 룩은 ‘클래식’이나 ‘아름다움’의 압박에 대한 저항이다. 펑크 등 서브 컬쳐에서 영감을 받은 그의 미래지향적 작품은 관람자에게 뷰티를 통해 자유로운 표현을 시도할 것을 제안한다. 최근에는 그의 디지털 작품을 담은 <JUSTFORFUN(그냥 재밌어서)> 매거진을 발간했다. 기발한 아름다움과 과감한 표현 수단을 추구하는 가모의 작품은 뷰티의 경계를 초월해 디지털 아트의 영역으로 들어서고 있다.
