ames Emmerman is a photographer based in New York. Hisphotography practice started in the darkness, photographingNew York’s Queer Lab and Nightlife from 2014 to 2017.Gradually, he began working with light and building a bodyof studio work inspired by his experiences shooting nightlife.Today, he mainly works on fashion editorials and portraitsbut retains elements of his roots in nightlife photography. Hiswork seamlessly blurs the lines between art and documentaryphotography, celebrating the possibilities of moderncommunities, gender, style, and expression. His photographsare as much an exploration of different ways of expressionas technical artistry. They raise the question of when imagescreate reality and when reality creates images.
뉴욕을 기반으로 활동 중인 포토그래퍼 제임스 에머맨은 어둠 속에서 사진을 찍기 시작하며, 그의 고유의 사진 스타일을 정립해갔다.2014년부터 2017년까지는 뉴욕의 ‘퀴어 랩(Queer Lab)’과 ‘나이트라이프(Nightlife)’를 촬영했고, 추후 밤에 촬영했던 경험에서 영감을 받아 조명을 이용한 스튜디오 촬영에도 도전하기 시작했다. 현재는 패션과 인물 위주 작업에 집중하고 있지만 그의 사진에는 여전히 클럽 신의 흔적이 곳곳에 남아있다. 에머맨은 미술과 다큐멘터리의 경계를 초월한 작업을 통해 현대 커뮤니티, 젠더, 패션, 그리고표현의 가능성을 탐색하고 있으며, 기술적인 측면에서도 다양한 표현 방법을 시도하고 도전함으로써 현실이 이미지를 형성하는지, 이미지가 현실을 형성하는지에 대한 질문을 제시하고 있다.
