DELADA

From London, United Kingdom

Interviewed by Cinjay Lee

-

How and when DELADA was born in this world? What does the name DELADA stand for?

DELADA’s first official collection was launched in 2017, we were so inspired by the rise in popularity within contemporary and street fashion so this collection was really a push to merge the designers already existing experience and aesthetic with characteristics more contemporary and reflective of current fashion and cultural trends. My name is Lada and I am the creative director of the brand, the name translates to ‘Of Lada’ therefore it just came from DELADA being a representation of my personal experiences and how they can manifest into clothing.

Lada, you were born in old Soviet Russia then settled in the UK. What was the biggest reason for you to decide to settle down in the UK?

I left Soviet Russia after University to pursue another degree. After the fall of the Soviet Union and after the borders were softened I decided to travel abroad. My move was really just catalysed by a desire and curiosity to see and experience more than what I knew and grew up surrounded by. I travelled to the US first when I received my MBA and later moved to UK with my family to be in Europe, close to my homeland.

Do you think there are any Russia-influenced elements in DELADA’s collection? If so, could you please elaborate on it?

The whole brand is very Russian influenced, no matter how much I try to elaborate and stylistically push my collection further than these influences they keep coming back. For a long time, our collections were inspired by periods within contemporary Russian history, such as the Perestroika period and the restructuring of Russian economy, as well as the sudden access of Western culture on Russian youth. Russian elements are built into the brand as much as they are built into me, the collections simply start to reflect my lived experiences. My memories and cultural heritage is where I find I can successfully develop a lot of my ideas from.
